Oia vs. Imerovigli: Which Santorini Village is Right for You?

April 9, 2024 · 5 min read

Santorini's cliffside villages are straight out of a postcard — but how do you choose where to stay or explore? Oia and Imerovigli are two of the most iconic, and while both are stunning, each offers a completely different experience.

Whether you're planning a honeymoon, a photography trip, or just want the best sunset on the island, here's how they compare.

vs
Oia Santorini

Oia

The Famous Sunset Capital

Known for its world-famous sunsets, luxury hotels, and iconic blue domes. It's busy, beautiful, and always photogenic. The go-to for first-time visitors.

Pros

  • Incredible views and iconic photo spots
  • High-end shopping and restaurants
  • Great for first-time visitors or honeymooners

Cons

  • Crowds, especially at sunset
  • Higher accommodation prices
  • Less privacy and quiet
Imerovigli Santorini

Imerovigli

The Balcony to the Aegean

Perched higher on the caldera with breathtaking views and far fewer crowds. Quiet, romantic, and often considered the hidden gem of Santorini.

Pros

  • Quiet, romantic atmosphere
  • More space and privacy
  • Stunning views — often even better than Oia

Cons

  • Fewer shops and restaurants
  • Less nightlife
  • Requires transfers to reach Oia

My Verdict

It depends on what you're after

If it's your first trip to Santorini and you want that bucket-list photo and buzz, Oia is unbeatable. But if you're looking to truly relax, avoid the crowds, and enjoy peaceful sunsets with a glass of wine — Imerovigli might be your perfect escape. Personally, I'd stay in Imerovigli and visit Oia for the day.

Wrapping Up

Whichever village you choose, you honestly can't go wrong on Santorini. The whole island is spectacular. My advice: if you have the time, spend a night or two in each and experience both sides of the caldera for yourself.
