What’s blue, can fly, and doesn’t care too much for comets?

This blue heron just vibing.

The C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan–ATLAS) comet has been annoyingly difficult to shoot from Vancouver, because we keep getting socked in every sunset.

I was able to rip out last night after seeing what looked like a small opening in the clouds for a slim chance at some visibility to shoot it.

Hopped in the car, ripped to a spot I thought would work, and quickly setup to locate it between the clouds & compose a shot. Then I noticed this Blue Heron perched on this ledge, entirely unaware of the comet making its close to earth approach on its 80,000 year orbit. (His loss!) But thanks for making this last minute shot a bit more interesting dood! 🐦 🫶🏻

Defff not the comet shot I was envisioning shooting, and really hoping for some better weather windows to get a more complete Timelapse, but this will have to do for now!

Seeing all the tsuchinshan-atlas comet photos really has me hoping for a break in the clouds this week to get some shots! 🤞🏻 Until then, here’s one of my favs from the Neowise comet a few years back.

Shot up at St Marks summit on the North Shore, such an epic night of shooting, until it faded behind the clouds.

Any idea how I got a shot like this?

I was out to try and shoot the comet the other night, but didn’t have any luck because of the clouds on the horizon. So instead played around with a vibey way to shoot the sunset.

How much moon, is too much moon? .. this much moon

How much moon, is too much moon? .. this much moon. Jus kidding, you can hang 🌝

This one has been somewhat of a bucket list shot for me, south facing and Aurora don’t usually mix too well here in Vancouver, as our auroras usually need a good chunk of north facing horizon. But with Thursday’s CME looking to be on par to the one in May, I thought there could be a chance, even with the aggressive 40% moon glow.

So I had a backup spot in mind I knew would be decent enough if WhyteCliff was a total bust, but wanted to spend a bit of time to see what I could get.

Definitely no dazzling or dancing Auroras here, because of the moon, but shooting the Aurora (even a faint portion) overtop of Whytecliff park is an epic one to add to the bag.

Hopefully get a few more chances at this one over the next year!

Lots more of epic shots to come though. Auroragram is back, and can’t get enough of it! 🫶🏻🤓

If you’re flying a Mini 3 Pro, shoot in D-Cinelike for a broader dynamic range and more freedom in post-editing. If your drone offers D-Log (lucky you), use that for even more flexibility and color detail.

Been a bit sick last few days, so didn’t have the energy to stay out late, so I’m very stoked to have seen them from home early! Looks like it was a pretty epic night though.

Save this if you wanna try super long exposures sometime!

If your shooting during the day, your gonna need a few things to make it possible.

The first is an ND filter. ND1000 is pretty good, but if you’re wanting to play around with exposures of several minutes, you’ll need an ND100k.

A sturdy tripod will prevent any camera shake, and make sure your shot is crisp. Even if it’s 5-6 minutes long.

I like having a shutter remote - rather than using the on camera timer. This way I can avoid bumping the camera and messing up my composition.

This was a 5 minute shutter using an ND100k.

I legit feel like a kid again when thunder / lightning storms roll through. They’re so rare for Vancouver, when I see them in the forecast, I always try to make sure I’m up to hopefully see!

This one last week woke me up in the early hours of the morning, so as quickly as I could, setup a Timelapse and starting snapping shots!

Here’s the result.

With lightning in the forecast last couple days, was optimistic I’d maybe get some bolts in a Timelapse off the patio. Sadly I did not, but here’s some extremely moody clouds rolling in over North Van.

You can see the sunset reflection off the buildings windows just as the clouds swallow up the city

My instagram feed has started to feel so saturated

My instagram feed has started to feel so saturated with ads, “trends”, or creators pushing ebooks, (some great ones too, no disrespect!) Just seems like the videos that get pushed these days are silly .1s clips of someone winking, or some other meaningless trend. It is what it is, but some days miss the old #tbt days lol.

The strongest solar storm since May hit earth last night, and 2nd strongest I’ve ever witnessed easily - the clouds had other plans though, so I only snapped a few shots before the aurora got swallowed up by cloud cover.

Hopefully get some more chances like this one, felt bittersweet watching it disappear behind the clouds!

Curious to see if people had better luck shooting it!
